Hosting gatherings—especially around the holidays—can bring so much joy, but it often comes with a surprising amount of waste. From disposable decorations to excessive packaging, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the environmental impact.
The good news? There are plenty of ways to reduce waste and embrace more sustainable hosting practices, without sacrificing style or comfort. Here are some of my favourite tips for eco-friendly hosting:
1. Buy Secondhand for Special Items
For items you’ll only use occasionally—like punch bowls, holiday-themed décor, or table linens—consider buying secondhand. Thrift stores and online marketplaces often have beautiful, unique pieces at a fraction of the cost (and carbon footprint!) of buying new.
2. Repurpose and DIY What You Already Have
Get creative with what’s lying around the house!
- Old sheets as tablecloths: Have a shrunken or worn-out sheet? Cut it down to size for a chic and custom tablecloth.
- Fabric scraps for decor: Use old towels or fabric remnants to sew reusable hot mitts or napkins. Not only is this eco-friendly, but it’s also a fun way to add a personal touch to your hosting essentials. Long strips also make great ribbons!
3. Opt for Kraft Paper Magic
Keep a roll of butcher or kraft paper handy for versatile, sustainable solutions:
- Table coverings: Lay kraft paper over your buffet table and write the names of each dish directly on the paper for a stylish and functional touch.
- Gift wrap: Instead of non-recyclable wrapping paper, use kraft paper and decorate it with paint markers or stamps. Add a touch of nature with dried orange slices or sprigs of cedar, tied up with butcher twine or fabric ribbons.
4. Decorate with Thrifted Glassware & Fabrics
- Thrifted glassware: There’s something so special about sipping cocktails from unique, vintage glasses. Plus, thrifting glassware keeps it out of the landfill!
- Fabric ribbons: Cut old fabric into strips for reusable bows and decorations. Tie them around gifts, wine glasses, or even your tree for an effortlessly chic and eco-conscious aesthetic.
5. Save the Fruits!
Got fruit that’s a little too ripe? Don’t toss it!
- Make jams or compotes: Turn overripe fruit into delicious spreads to serve with your charcuterie board.
- Dehydrated garnishes: Slice and dehydrate fruits like oranges, lemons, or apples for beautiful (and tasty) drink garnishes.
6. DIY Ice Solutions
Running out of ice for a big gathering? No problem!
- Fill a freezer bag with water and lay it flat to freeze. When it’s frozen solid, give it a few good smashes to create smaller, useable pieces.
- Rotate ice cube trays throughout the week before your event. Store the cubes in a freezer-safe container so you’ll have plenty by the time your guests arrive.
Do you have any other creative ways to reduce waste while hosting? I’d love to hear your tips—let’s inspire each other to make hosting a little greener this holiday season!
